Musicians on every continent are joining together to Spread 'Harmony for Humanity'

The 7th annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days are being held October 1 - 31, 2008. Over the last 5 years events have been held in Cyprus and this year sees the arrival of San Francisco based beat-maker, MC and music industry lecturer, Steffen Franz aka Stand Out Selector who will join local artists in performances and many related activities.

Musicians of every genre - professional, amateur and youth - are invited to participate in this global network of concerts, using the power of music to help spread a message of hope, unity and "Harmony for Humanity." Performances by the World Music Days Honorary Committee, including Grammy Award winner Herbie Hancock, are expected to be among the highlights, as in previous years.

Since World Music Days' inception, more than 2,000 concerts in 77 countries have been dedicated in memory of Daniel Pearl, The Wall Street Journal reporter murdered by extremists in Pakistan shortly after 9/11. Pearl, was a talented musician who believed in the power of music to bridge differences and unite people around their shared humanity. The Foundation established World Music Days in 2002 to honor his October 10th birthday.

"Danny joined musical groups in every community he visited, playing everything from classical and jazz to folk, rock and bluegrass," explained Judea Pearl, Daniel's father and president of the Daniel Pearl Foundation. "He used music to overcome cultural and language barriers, leaving a long trail of musician friends around the globe. World Music Days continues his legacy of hope and international friendship."

Power of Words Tour - California (Update)

Power of Words California Tour (Update)

For Immediate Release – July 17th, 2006

San Francisco, CA - The music scene in America has forgotten one of the most important factors of creative expression. The words, or lyrics, which have been so important to past generations, have given way to simple "party" lyrics and "sing along" hooks, whose basic message hopes to reach only the least common denominator of today's listening and music buying audience. Gone are the days when people sang to communicate social and political awareness, while the real "truthspeakers" are snuffed out or ignored until they loose the will to create. Music as we know it has always been a sort of "newspaper" which gives the listener insight on current events and the news of our times. Somewhere along these lines the message got lost.

With this, "The Power of Words" concept in mind, Independent Distribution Collective (IDC) an artist friendly CD distribution company, decided to develop a small tour which would not only feature artists with a message, but artists who would make that message the main focal point of their live performances. IDC chose two artists from their vast catalog who put the lyrics at the forefront of their live performances. One artist, Haji Mike, is a Cypriot Poet, MC and Ph.D. who spent many years in England, where he was exposed to both reggae music and spoken word poetry. His tireless efforts to help heal a decades long division in his homeland of Cyprus, and his constant support of the youth culture there makes it easy to see why he was chosen for this tour. The other artist, Karney, is a San Francisco born Singer/Songwriter who has toured all of the US, and performed and written songs alongside countless different and diverse musical icons. Always a socially conscious person, and supporter of many forms of creative art, Karney's biting wit and political lyrics are always present in any of her live shows. This tour will also feature some amazing local acts in each of these cities.

It is important for this tour to reach audiences who are looking for a message in today's music. With that in mind IDC focused on a few markets in Northern California, which have always been home to social change in America. San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and Chico, California seem perfect places for these shows. With this small tour as a proving ground, IDC hopes to launch dozens of these types of tours across the US over the next few years. This tour will include live musical performances with a full band, acoustic performances, and even a few spoken word poetry and educational presentations. Please help support independent and intelligent music.

For more information or to arrange interviews with these artists please feel free to contact Steffen Franz at IDC, 415 292-7007 or e-mail standout@independentdistro.com

New US based Independent CD Distributor is Born!

For Immediate Release:
September 7, 2004

Independent Distribution Collective is Born

A fresh, new concept in independent music distribution is set to revolutionize the current form of bringing physical products to market, and in turn, to unite hundreds of independent labels and artists worldwide.

Independent Distribution Collective was conceived from the idea that independent record labels and artists have almost always struggled with one major aspect of operation, distribution. Thousands of releases go unnoticed every year as many great projects never even make it into stores, never mind having sales to offset the cost of manufacturing. The time has come for the "underdogs" to approach distribution equal to the other aspects in the process of making albums. It is also clear that many independent labels and artists working together creates a "strength in numbers" perspective that makes Independent Distribution Collective a sales and marketing force, rather than just another one stop.

Nine labels currently make up IDC. All of them are totally different genres, with different fanbases and marketing strategies. Each one has a strong knowledge of its home market, in places like the San Francisco "Bay Area", Miami, and even in Cyprus. The main theme that unites these labels is the belief that they could be selling more records if they could participate in the distribution process. All of the labels realize that working together, sharing focus and energy, that each one's sales will increase and create a stronger distribution partner down the road. As each will have a new-found revenue stream, it is IDC's intention that each label can continue to release new projects, thereby feeding the collective's constant need for new product.

IDC will open its doors September 15th, 2004, at its new office/warehouse in Oakland, California. Events to promote the opening will include a full scale web launch of independentdistro.com, the collective's website which focuses primarily on wholesale distribution, release and label information, as well as the product submission process. Other events include the IDC "Pressing Flesh" tour from Seattle to San Diego, September 6th through the 14th, covering 3 states, and close to 20 cities in a complete west coast grassroots marketing promotion.
